So it has been a while…
I realize it has been a while since my last post from Stecoah. I have not had any trips since then, mostly due to a work injury which has kept me from riding. But not for the reasons you might think. Keep reading past the break for the full story.
Out and About in Fall
This past weekend was a great one. Lows were in the 40s, and on Saturday it may have gotten up to 61, Sunday 75. On Saturday, I went out, rode up and down the river a bit, stopped over at Flat 12 Brewery in Jeffersonville, IN, then on to Holy Grail Alehouse, and then went back and got some food at Corner Cafe. I also stopped by the historic Louisville Water Tower on the river, and Cox’s park.
Horizons Unlimited, Stecoah, NC – 2016
This year I headed out on Wednesday, October 5 at just after 8:00 am for Iron Horse Lodge in Stecoah, NC. It was a 310 mile trip down via US27 and a few others, including the famous roads of US129 (Tail of the Dragon) and US28 (Moonshiner28). I arrived after an uneventful trip at 3:15, give or take. Wednesday night was pretty easy going, with not a whole lot going on. It was nice to relax a bit after a pretty long, non-stop ride.
2016 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days
Last week I headed north after work (at 3PM) to the Mid-Ohio raceway in Lexington, OH for the 2016 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. This marks my 2nd trip to this event, and one that will stay on my yearly calendar for a long time to come. I was supposed to go up Thurday night, however things came up that were not expected.
The whole week, and all Friday, I was watching the weather, and keeping my fingers crossed for the rain to skip over and miss me for the ride up. Early in the afternoon, there was a downpour, however once I left, I only encountered some sprinkles just outside of Jefferson county. From there on, it was dry roads, and overcast skies (which is ok for me.)
There will be photos at the bottom of the story.
Good and Poor Planning
Slew of work done
Lots has happened in the last few weeks, but very little of it had to do with motorcycling. Yesterday, however, I took Raven in to the dealer to have a few things done, as my riding time coming up was going to be few and far between. First, I needed the instrument cluster replaced as they put the wrong one on when the recall was performed last June. There was also a couple other things to have checked for recall status as well. But the biggest, was getting the 12,000 mile and the 16,000 mile services done. The 12K service included getting the air filter changed, and that required all the plastics to come off (no thanks, not for me) and since they had to do the same to get the cluster replaced, it was perfect. Saved on labor, having it done with the recall instead. The 16K service was mostly an oil change, but also a full brake system check, which is pretty important. I was expecting it to take at least a week, but I got a call this morning saying she was done. So Friday, being a 1/2 day, I will be picking her up early. All in all, excellent news all around.
Derby Escape Ride 2016
This was the 2nd annual trip from Louisville, KY to Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge state parks in eastern KY. I started it as a way to get out of Louisville during the Kentucky Derby and miss all the crowds and issues that come with an extra few hundred thousand people partying all over the city.
